We'll circle back to this mesh network after it’s been updated, and retest it in our next test cycle. We’re tracking a handful of new models to consider for our next update in early 2023, including ones based on the newer Wi-Fi 6E standard that have started to come out at a faster pace. This expanded wireless standard will take advantage of newly deregulated 6 GHz radio frequencies.
It was one of the few mesh kits we tested with a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port to support faster-than-gigabit connections, if your modem and internet provider supports them. So far, gigabit-capable doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll get gigabit speeds for all of your devices at all spots in your home. We wanted to test an inexpensive mesh kit like the TP-Link Deco S4 and compare it with the other mesh networks here. While it placed near the bottom on our throughput tests, it was still faster than the Eero Pro + 2 Beacons and the Archer A7 standalone router we used for comparison at the same distances.
Setting Up the MeshForce M3s
It’s something you’d want to look into if you really want to spend hours tweaking, have an Ethernet wired home, or can spend a lot of time adding UniFi access points to create a bespoke solution for your home. The Netgear Nighthawk MK83 is a good plan B if the Asus ZenWiFi AX is out of stock, or if it is $50 to $100 more expensive than the MK83. The Nighthawk is well suited to a 3,000-square-foot or larger home with gigabit internet service, topping our throughput test and finishing near the top on our latency tests. However, all the added fees and paid subscriptions listed below diminished the MK83’s overall rating.
TP-Link’s Deco S4 will spread solid Wi-Fi 5 signals to dozens of devices throughout a large home, but it doesn’t have the top speed or flexibility of our other picks. And if you have more than 50 devices on your network—increasingly possible when you add smart-home products on top of phones, laptops, and streaming boxes—there’s a higher chance the S4 will be overtaxed. Its price reflects that, so Deco S4 is the choice if you need to serve a few folks in a large home, and if your broadband internet service is 500 megabits or slower. Wi-Fi that sucks can be more frustrating than no Wi-Fi at all, and the culprit in many cases is one router trying to cover too much house.

For those who aren't sure what they're looking at, the decibels relative to milliwatts score is the one to keep an eye on.
But when we stressed the network with six laptops simultaneously, the Vilo’s performance was much poorer than the competition, finishing near the bottom of our results. We also experienced dropped connections on half of our laptops during the simultaneous tests, as we don’t recommend the Vilo unless your needs are exceptionally mild in a spread-out home. Netgear’s new, top-of-the-line Orbi mesh kit is available as a three-piece model. It adds 6 GHz bands and Wi-Fi 6E compatibility to a robust and expensive mesh networking system.

This kit might work if you want to inexpensively outfit a spread-out home that doesn’t have a lot of devices and has a basic internet plan . The Trendnet TEW-830MDR2K was one of the least expensive mesh kits in our roundup and also had small unobtrusive nodes. Each node had screw mounting holes molded into their bases, which is a nice touch.
Anything above -40dBM is an excellent connection; anything below -80dBM and you'll struggle to stream or place VOIP calls. As you can see, the connection in my bedroom is on the cusp of being unusable. Remember, one unit will need to be connected to your current modem using an Ethernet cable.

Your wired connection will have both a higher throughput and lower latency, or the time you’re sitting waiting for the website, game server, or streaming service to respond and send data back. Another option is to connect multiple routers you have lying around with Ethernet, but that’s a story for another guide. Mesh shines when you don’t have wires, don’t want wires, and have lots of trouble spots with poor or no coverage. The Linksys Atlas 6 dual-band mesh kit performed well on our throughput tests, but was mid-pack on latency when the network was fully active. However, it is exceedingly simple to set up and administer as a mesh network, without the security or parental control subscriptions that our Eero 6 top pick will make you pay for. The Atlas 6 also gives you the choice to sign up for a Linksys online account for setup or administer the mesh system on a built-in webpage, an increasingly rare option.

For past versions of this guide, we tested absolutely every mesh kit we could find—but these days the number of mesh kits is growing, and we’re getting pickier. We researched dual- and tri-band mesh kits from each of the major router manufacturers, including Asus, D-Link, Eero, Netgear, and TP-Link. We also looked for routers from lesser-known manufacturers with strong reviews from tech experts or potentially interesting features that set them apart. The dual-band Netgear Nighthawk MK62 (and its three-piece sibling, the MK63) is a relatively inexpensive mesh kit, with small nodes that are easy to hide.

I’ve never had any dropouts, disconnections, random restarts, or anything like that. TP-Link announced they will have Wi-Fi 7 routers and mesh systems in early 2023, including the Deco BE95, BE75, and BE65. All three use the 6 GHz radio frequency highlighted above, and are backward compatible with Wi-Fi 5, 6, and 6E. At the start, we anticipate that Wi-Fi 7 will improve communication between the mesh network’s router and extenders. Like with Wi-Fi 6E, you’ll have to wait for Wi-Fi 7-compatible laptops and phones to be released before you can fully utilize Wi-Fi 7 and harness its improvements.
So far, I am extremely happy with this router so I don’t hesitate in recommending it to anyone and everyone. If you are looking for a very good quality mesh wifi system, just get this one. The next time someone asks for your Wifi password, you don’t have to reveal the real one. You can create a guest network in one click and provide the new wifi name and password to them. So, if you want the guest wifi to be terminated after 4 hours, you can do it. In simple terms, dual-band means you have two frequency bands in the router.
The Nest Wifi router is a dedicated Wi-Fi 5 base unit with two Ethernet ports, and the wireless-only Nest Wifi access points have Google Assistant functionality and a smart speaker built in. In our testing, the Nest Wifi kit excelled at the single-client throughput tests but lagged the Eero Pro + 2 Beacons when all six laptops were using the network at the same time. While the Nest Wifi is easy to set up if you use Google’s services often, there are privacy concerns with Google’s Assistant technology, which extend to the websites and services you visit using the Nest Wifi.
UAP-AC-Lite units currently cost about $80 apiece, but you can use the router you already have on hand. Most of the mesh kits are capable of using a wired connection to any or all of their satellites, but they’re all considerably more expensive than Ubiquiti access points. During our testing, the Eero 6 offered fast performance when our laptop was close to the base router, but throughput dropped off when the signal was bounced through the add-on adapters or through multiple walls.
